Prof. Lee Tain Dow

Professor Lee has written extensively about film / television aesthetics and criticism, also has made other major research contributions to the study of mass media and popular culture; media globalization; and media/entertainment and culture industries. His works include Taiwanese Cinema, Society and Histoy; The Globalization of Transnational Media: Imaginary Spheres and Identity Incorporation (Rotterdam: Barjesteh Van Waalwijk Van Doorn & Co’s., 2002), “We are Chinese? Music and Identity in Cultural China” (Curzon Press 2002) and the anthology Re-mapping the Asia-Pacific Mediascapes. Also several large-scale research projects he conducted include The Cultural Appropriation and Adaptation of Japanese Television Trendy Drama in Taiwan (a project granted by the Sumitomo Foundation, Tokyo, Japan) and The Global Competition of Creative Industries: the Position and Developmental Strategies of Audio-Visual Media in the Greater Chinese Region (a project granted by Asia Development Foundation). These works established Lee as a pioneer and one of the leaders in contemporary critical/cultural and media studies in the greater Chinese academic community.
In 2003, Professor Lee founded the 'Envisage: A Journal Book of Chinese Media Studies', published by the Communication Arts Research Institute, Taipei, Taiwan, which is up to its 4th issue in 2006.
Professor Lee was the dean of College of Creative Media, Kun Shan University from 2000-2006. Since then he has maintained his research interest in media studies, while also working to establish the culture/ creative industries as a field of research. Also he has helped to move the creative arts and design towards a closer engagement with economic enterprise and policy developers. This has involved studying ways to turn already successful creative areas into future sites of wealth creation and practical application. He is working on several funded projects in this area.
