French sales companies have been more proactive for longer in the Asia region than many others. French production companies have used public and private finance to invest in Franco-Asian co-venture films such as those by Wang Chao, Tsai Ming-liang and Hous Hsiao-hsien. They have also backed 'underground' films by Lou Ye. And French distributors are often among the first to pre-buy Asian films.

This seminar will ask:
- if the relationship is a two-way street?
- if French finance and festivals are having the subtle effect of defining how Asian art house films should look?
- what will change as France expands its official co-production treaties in Asia?
- and ask if other areas of co-operation such as post-production, TV, web show equal promise
