Nick Fraser has been editor of Storyville since it started in 1997. He describes it as “a good deed of the BBC,” and, he says, “films shown on STORYVILLE come from anywhere in the world, and deal with any subject – this is a relatively new idea.”

Nick Fraser was born in London in 1948, to a British father and French mother. In 1969 he graduated from Exeter College, Oxford with a first class degree in English. He has worked as a reporter and television producer and editor. Books published by him include a biography of Eva Peron, and The Voice of Modern Hatred, a study of extremism and race hate in contemporary Europe. Short Books published his book The Importance of Being Eton in 2006. He admits to a “persistent, undefeatable belief in the power of reason”. He is proud of being a contributing editor of Harper’s Magazine in New York, “the best magazine in the world”, in which his essays about the BBC, Isaiah Berlin and anti-Americanism have been published. Nick Fraser also writes cultural commentary for the Observer and travel pieces for Conde Nast Traveller.

In recent years films shown on STORYVILLE have won many major awards, including three Oscars, a Grand Jury prize at Sundance, several Griersons and several Emmy’s.

Nick Fraser was series editor on the Why Democracy? Series for the BBC. The project launched on 7 October 2007 with simultaneous broadcasts in 42 countries and has since won countless awards including the 2008 Peabody award.

He is a contributing editor for Harper’s Magazine (New York). Recent articles have tackled subjects as Isaiah Berlin, J.G. Ballard and The Habsburgs and Arthur Koestler. At present he is writing a piece about The Hague as the centre of the World’s prototype system for prosecuting war criminals and dictators.
