Mr. Howard Frumes

"Howard M. Frumes joined the firm in 1998 after being a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips in its Los Angeles office since 1984. A 1974 graduate of Harvard Law School, Frumes started his legal career with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County. He became an associate, and then a partner, in the entertainment firm, Pollock, Bloom & Dekom. After working as an entertainment and intellectual property litigator, he began his specialization in transactional work involving motion picture distribution, production and financing. Frumes has handled many successful arbitration matters involving the entertainment guilds and unions as well as commission disputes, contract actions and employment claims. He represents producers, directors, writers, authors, actors, executives, talent agencies and others in various aspects of the entertainment industry. Frumes serves as Chairman of AFMA’s Legal Committee, was selected as the U.S. attorney to serve on AFMA’s Arbitration Advisory Committee and is a member of the AFMA international arbitrator’s panel. Frumes was a panelist at the first International Artists Rights Symposium, moderated a Show Biz Expo panel entitled “Film Distribution: How Past Lessons Can Lead Us Into The Future,” and also moderated two different industry seminars at the 1995 American Film Market. He was the moderator of the first joint UCLA Extension/AFMA course, entitled “International Distribution, Marketing & Finance of Independent Films,” in the Summer of 1993, and has since taught additional joint UCLA Extension/AFMA courses. Frumes has also lectured on film production and distribution agreements, idea protection for writers, international film issues, negotiating techniques, arbitration settlement strategies and other subjects at the Cannes Film Festival, ABA Convention, UCLA, Whittier Law School, Loyola Law School, and elsewhere.
